Our Commitment to Sustainability

As proud members of the Sustainable Furnishings Council it’s important to us to maintain our efforts into producing responsibly made furniture and lighting in ways that protect and preserve the planet. Smilow Design works to fulfill this in a few key ways.

Our lumber is responsibly sourced and produced. While not officially FSC certified, the lumber mill we use is local to our factory and burns it’s waste wood for heat—as does our factory—and what it doesn’t burn is turned into animal bedding. We additionally are committed to avoiding sourcing illegal and controversial wood species that may do more harm that good to our environment and communities.

We work hard to give Smilow pieces second and third lives by assisting with the sales of second-hand, vintage, and imperfect Smilow furniture and lighting pieces, keeping the pieces out of landfills and in people’s homes.

Lastly, in 2022 we began a partnership with One Tree Planted to plant trees for every piece of furniture sold. In 2022 we planted 1800 trees back into the forests as part of the Oregon Planting Project. We hope to plant even more in 2023 and beyond.
